Prospective Graduate Students
The ACHA differs in several ways from the NCAA, including allowing graduate students to play.
ACHA
There are just over 160 men's college hockey programs in the country. The Ohio State men's club is one of several ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association) programs in the state. The ACHA consists of college clubs from coast to coast; the league is complete with preseason, season, and postseason rankings, a national tournament, and year-end awards, such as All-American teams, etc.
Program Goals and Objectives
In addition to hockey, our coaching staff enjoys stating that our team goals aren't necessarily hockey goals. Rather, our main aspiration is to develop trustworthy, dependable people and responsible citizens through the life lessons found in athletic competition. Four core principals serve as the foundation of our team: love, trust, respect, and personal responsibility. Hockey is the conduit through which these character attributes are instilled.
These are the team's program goals and objectives:
- have a successful season
- learn life lessons
- build life-long friendships thru hockey family
- develop a strong program foundation for those to follow
- have fun
Program Requirements
Ohio State Men's Club hockey is for players who are looking to continue playing hockey at a very competitive level, while still having enough time for social and educational opportunities. While it is a privilege to be part of the club hockey team and participation in all team events is highly encouraged, players' faith, family, and academic responsibilities come before the team. If you are going to miss any such function, let the coaches know with as much notice as possible.
The Ohio State Men's Club Hockey team does it's best to make available opportunities to those players wishing to intensely dedicate themselves to their sport. Off-ice strength and speed training is a part of the team's weekly schedule, both in-season and during the off-season. The coaching staff encourages all players to participate in these activities. A typical week consists of two practices (evening) and two games (Fri/Sat) per week. In order to reach the club's goal of a National Championship, off-ice training is encouraged and made available to those players wishing to make the extra effort to improve. Strength and conditioning testing will take place periodically throughout the year in an effort to measure players' progress.
Deciding playing time is always the coach's discretion. With consideration to ACHA bench maximums (19 skaters, 2 goalies) game eligibility criteria for individual players are based on a number of factors, including past attendance at team events (practices, off-ice activities), skill level, and individual player effort (on and off the ice).
Tryouts:
- They are generally held within the first few weeks of class autumn quarter. Please check the website for updates regarding tryout dates and times.
- Player personnel are coach's discretion
- 25 skaters and 3 goalies are optimum but not firm
Program Cost
The cost for particpating is directly correlated with fundraising and sponsorship efforts. Men's club hockey will work to supply fundraising programs while outside recommendations will be entertained. Players are required to provide their own equipment including black pants, and black or red gloves. Discounted prices may be offered for such items. Variations of these items may be provided by the team and included in the cost of playing. Players can also expect additional costs for some travel expenses.
If you have any other questions about playing you can email the head coach, Dan Larkin at HeadCoach@OSUMensClubHockey.com or the team's president at President@OSUMensClubHockey.com.
